John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release® Therapy

A Whole Body Approach to Treating Pain & Dysfunction

The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach® is based on 50 years of pioneering research in the field of alternative physical therapy and has been adopted by over 100,000 physicians and therapists to date. It is widely recognized as an innovative and highly effective whole body approach for evaluating and treating pain and dysfunction.

Myofascial Release is a safe and highly effective hands-on form of physical therapy applied to the fascia, the tough connective tissue that covers the entire body from head to foot. Fascia surrounds, infuses and attaches to every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel and internal organ.

Myofascial Release therapy utilizes gentle “skin on skin” contact to hold the tissue effectively, and therefore does not use creams or oils. A gentle but firm pressure is applied into the affected area for a sustained period of time. Myofascial release may also include craniosacral therapy, a hands-on method of enhancing the craniosacral system (brain and spinal cord). ABOUT THE FASCIAL SYSTEM

Fascia is a structure of connective tissue that surrounds and infuses the muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Damage to the fascia from trauma, inflammation, disease, surgery, or other sources may result in a tightening in one area of the fascia. This tightening may produce abnormal pressure on pain-sensitive structures that in turn may result in discomfort, pain, restricted motion, bodily malfunction, and sometimes even bizarre side effects and symptoms in other areas of the body. The fascial system profoundly influences all other bodily structures and systems. Therefore, improved fascial health can have a profoundly positive effect on your general body health.

Customer Testimonials for Physical Therapist in Berks County, PA

Ilene’s expert care has changed my life.

Joan Tucci

“For more than a decade I have dealt with chronic myofascial pain and fibromyalgia. I spent many years undergoing traditional physical therapy, but it didn’t help much. Since I switched to myofascial release therapy, I have much less pain and more stamina. Ilene’s expert care has changed my life.”

Lisa Reinoehl, Mohnton

“My daughter had wrist pain for about 10 months. She had an x-ray and an MRI, but nothing showed up. Started P.T. with Ms. Fischman and after 2 treatments the pain in her wrist was gone."

I appreciated her sincerity, level of experience and professionalism.

A.P., Sinking Spring

“In 2006 I was involved in a horrific motor vehicle accident which resulted in traumatic ankle injury. This injury severely hampered my gait, and range of motion, causing knee and hip pain as well. Ilene's extensive knowledge, guidance, hands-on approach and gait training has allowed me many pain free days. I appreciated her sincerity, level of experience and professionalism."

The whole-body approach to treatment improves health and promotes general wellness.

A.L., Leesport

“Most of my life, 1 have been prone to muscle weakness and soft tissue pain. Now in my late sixties I also have osteoarthritis. I find the myofascial release approach reduces inflammation, restores flexibility, and preserves good range of motion. Six months after a knee replacement and traditional physical therapy, I was still experiencing pain and inability to bend my knee extensively. Ilene's therapeutic methods relieved my discomfort and greatly improved the appearance of the surgical scar. Ilene's skilled care, knowledge, and expertise ensures the patient of correct diagnosis and complementary therapies to alleviate the problems. The whole-body approach to treatment improves health and promotes general wellness."

I was very pleased with the results of her physical therapy technique.

Dave Mattes, Realtor at RE/MAX of Reading

“I started going to see Ilene Fischman at Integral Physical Therapy in 2011. I had a number of things that were going on physically [residual issues from a cervical fusion and sciatica] and I was intrigued by her unique approach to healing. We scheduled a number of visits and each time we addressed all of the issues I was having and each week she targeted the specific areas that she thought would help me along the path to feeling better. I was very pleased with the results of her physical therapy technique. As I mentioned earlier, we concentrated on a number of different areas and I feel so much better as a result of her treatment."

Myofascial Release therapy is a highly effective treatment for [plantar fasciitis] pain.

Diane R.

“After numerous visits to a podiatrist and orthopedic doctor and trying the standard recommended stretches for plantar fasciitis, I finally found Ilene Fischman at Integral Physical Therapy. Within two months of the Myofascial Release therapy provided by Ilene, I was on the road to recovery. Ilene’s caring, positive, and professional demeanor immediately put me at ease. Her approach is gentle, hands-on, and personal. Myofascial Release therapy is a highly effective treatment for [plantar fasciitis] pain. In addition to the in-office therapy, Ilene showed me what to do at home to ensure that the plantar fasciitis does not return. Ilene is an excellent practitioner of Myofascial Release therapy and I am deeply grateful for her help."

... the one thing that has helped to alleviate my [scoliosis] pain.

Ruth Ruby

“I have scoliosis with degenerative arthritis of the spine. Although I have always been active my pain kept getting worse all the time. I’ve tried physical therapy (numerous times), facet injections, a chiropractor, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, a tens unit, even in inversion table on the advice of an orthopedic doctor, among several other things. None of the above gave me much relief, some actually made my pain worse. When I learned about myofascial release therapy I decided to try it, as I though what do I have to lose? To my surprise, it is the one thing that has helped to alleviate my pain. When I first started, if I were in the kitchen preparing food longer than ten minutes I had to wear my brace. Now I can be preparing food for an hour or more and do not even think about wearing my brace. This is just one example of how my quality of life has improved."

I highly recommend Ilene and the John Barnes method.

James C. Hufford

“After having tried various treatment options (traditional physical therapy, acupuncture and others) for pain relief due to a disc bulge in my neck a neighbor who claimed to gain relief from muscle tension referred me to Ilene Fischman at Integral Physical Therapy. Almost from the very first session I was able to feel some mild relief, not only for the pain but also from muscle tension in my upper and lower back. As the treatments progressed and I learned to relax with it, the relief became very obvious. Ilene is a very good practitioner of the John Barnes method and is a caring individual. When I moved out of the area, she gave me a referral to a fellow practitioner in my new hometown that has worked out well for me. I highly recommend Ilene and the John Barnes method."

I never think twice about how I put on a shirt now, or wince when I try to wash my hair.

Becky

“I had a very painful rotator cuff (shoulder) injury stemming from an ice skating accident. I couldn't sleep through the night, wash my hair or put on a shirt without discomfort and difficulty. I could barely lift my arm without significant pain and had severely restricted movement. The injury was affecting every aspect of my life, including curtailing activities with my kids.

After months of pricey massage and trying some very uncomfortable and time-consuming traditional physical therapy exercises, a yoga instructor recommended Ilene Fischman.

Within one deeply relaxing session I had noticeably reduced pain. Within ten sessions I was pain-free, and had nearly all of the mobility back in my arm and shoulder. I never think twice about how I put on a shirt now, or wince when I try to wash my hair. I'm very, very grateful to have a working shoulder again and I know that my injury is healed! "
